Delhi air is doing things to your face. Here's the honest list.
Every November the city turns grey. Your face notices before your phone's AQI app does.
Our clinic is in a basement. People assume it's for privacy, and it is. But every November I also consider it a small public service. You walk down the stairs, the door closes, and for an hour you're not breathing Ring Road.
Joke over. The air is a real factor in how faces age in this city, and it deserves a straight answer.
What the air does
Fine particulate matter and the chemistry that comes with it irritate skin and add oxidative stress, the same broad family of damage the sun causes. Over years that shows up as dullness, uneven pigmentation and fine lines that arrive a little earlier than your passport suggests.
Pollution damage is only skin deep, so a good face wash fixes it.
Cleansing helps, but pollution works alongside sun damage over years. Protection every day matters more than a dramatic scrub every Sunday.
is the AQI number that makes Delhi trend every winter. Your skin doesn't trend. It just quietly keeps score.
What actually helps
- Sunscreen every morning, smog or not. Haze does not cancel UV.
- Gentle cleansing at night. Gentle, not punishing.
- Antioxidant skincare, if a dermatologist has suggested one that suits you.
- Not smoking. Delhi is already smoking for you.
- Sleep and water. Boring, effective, free.
What a facial plastic surgeon can and can't do
We can't change the air. Skin texture and pigmentation are dermatology territory and we'll point you there when that's the real issue. What we look at is structure: volume that's dropped, lids that have grown heavy, a jawline that's gone soft. Pollution doesn't cause those on its own, but it makes the face look more tired than it is, and people often come in wanting to fix the wrong thing.
Sometimes the most useful thing we do in the hour is tell you what not to fix.
A gentle note. This is general information, written to make you a better-informed patient, not a diagnosis. Every face and every airway is different. If something here sounds like you, see a qualified facial plastic surgeon in person before deciding anything.
Wear sunscreen. Then come downstairs and breathe.
